Marc Elsener

Works from the solo exhibition Daydreams, February–May 2019.

Marc Elsener’s paintings begin with an imaginary landscape in which everyday situations, myths, traditions, and contemporary culture meet. Working mainly in small formats and in oil on cut wooden panels, he develops his compositions over time, often starting from a single idea that he translates into a precise and detailed scene. His figures inhabit landscapes where scale, perspective, gravity, and logic can shift freely.

Drawing on folk art, literature, art history, and contemporary visual culture, Elsener combines familiar images and objects in unexpected ways. His works turn ordinary situations into absurd scenes, where humour emerges from the tension between different worlds, references, and ways of seeing.
