Andy Storchenegger’s practice explores cultural connotations, alienation, and the ways forms and symbols shift between different cultural contexts. Drawing on field research in the South Pacific, South America, Africa, and local Swiss traditions, he combines visual elements associated with ritual, folklore, and ideas of the “wild” or “primitive.” Masks and other traditional forms often serve as starting points for his sculptures, which transform these references through changes in material, colour, and context. In doing so, Storchenegger creates works that hover between familiarity and estrangement, opening them to new associations and individual interpretations.
